Asher and Julie

Asher has a companion all weekend. Much milder and larger she mellows him out.

They both walked nicely on leash together.

Asher has to down for everything still til it is second nature.

We worked on heeling outdoors too.

:(

Poor Asher, mommy was sick for two weeks in bed and then his sister Mirabelle had a life threatening ER visit last week Wednesday - Thursday.

So poor Asher's training starts today again.

Sunday - Asher's Novice Competition Training Log

Training Date: Sunday, February 12, 2012
Training Location: Home - Living Room

On Leash Heeling: Did not work on this

Off Leash Healing: Worked on heeling in living room, some slippers and whatnot present so he would look down briefly to step over them, but maintained good eye contact. Did really good going up stairs while heeling. Did some driving/about face at top of steps then came back down.

Figure 8's: Did not work on this

Stand for Exam: Did well with this, did a stand without a treat lure.

Recall: Still not doing front as close as I would like, did a few where I threw the treat through my legs. He did chase it. He did an excellent perfect recall and front with no treats yesterday outside off leash with another dog present as a distraction, so I know he can do it.

Sit Stay: Did 30s sit/stay with a recall.

Down Stay: Did 1m down/stay with a recall at the end.

Other days

Daily worked on threshold work. He is required to sit and wait on my command before crossing a door threshold. If he doesn't do it I correct him and make him sit and wait again

If he is automatically sitting now before I say it is that ok?

Monday

Worked on down, sit and stay indoors with treats and corrections.

Saturday

Worked with Asher off leash in a park setting for come. He didn't always obey and after that he remained on leash the entire time.

I had to walk over and put him back on leash. He seemed to be tempted by dead things like a dead fox carcass we found, so not sure if it's a fair test.

Sit off leash worked well.

Last night

Worked on stand and down with leash corrections. Did a few minutes of playtime off leash after.

Asher also doesn't know how to fetch. He grabs the item but doesn't want to give it up. I use 2 toys but I'm not sure how to tighten things up so he's more willing to drop it at my feet and trade. Right now it's rather sloppy.

This weekend

We worked on door threshold sitting and waiting. All except outdoor recall are 15 min sessions. I only missed Friday for training.

We worked on down and stand but those are still weak. He does this weird scooting butt forward instead if doing a stand when presented with a treat to lure him. I did do one kick stand with him at the end of a session.

We also worked on recall off leash with another puppy in the yard. I'd call him back in and send him out. Did that for four hours this week minimum.

We also did the between the legs to train for front. I still feel like there is hesitation when I turn around and call him the 2nd time but I haven't rewarded bad behavior. Some of it may be my own halting and poor coordination.

The other thing I need to work on is making sure he has his training leash on for corrections. In the past, I might just start a spontaneous session and he wouldn't have the leash on.

What I struggle with

Listening to what I'm supposed to do and moving quickly. I am awkward and clumsy so it takes practice for me to learn new things and move quickly.

What Asher Struggles With

This morning we worked on down. Need to continue so I do less of the work. Right now have to bend too far over.

Other things:
Heeling
Being kenneled without being a holy terror
The telephone, doorbell and printer
Leave it
Humping dogs and pet bedding
Down on command
Stand on command

I kenneled Asher for the first 2 years of his life. It has always been a fight. Sometimes as much as 10 to 20 minutes. After he stopped getting into things I gave up. So far I have gotten him used to eating meals in his kennel 2x a day. I have thought about buying a new kennel to start fresh with training.

Asher is now on 6 mg a day of melatonin.
